Mind-Body Ritual #9: Heart-Center Breath

Heart-Center Breath

Mind-Body Ritual #9

Heart-Center Breath

Position

Seated upright with neutral spine in a chair, rock, or log (preferably in nature or somewhere quiet)

Breathing

INHALE through the nose

EXHALE through the nose

Intention

Unconditional Love. Self-Compassion.

"I bring expansive yet deepening awareness into my heart-center. I AM an endless wellspring of Love and Light."

Practice

Find a quiet, peaceful environment where you can sit upright comfortably.

Place your hands, palm over palm on top of the heart-center.

Men: Place left palm directly over heart-center with right palm overlaid.

Women: Place right palm directly over heart-center with left palm overlaid.

The central point of the heart-center will be in the middle of the sternum, directly along the midline.

Begin to breathe into the heart-center with focused awareness.

Experiment with positioning and posture to make this feel good and natural.

Feel the rise and fall of the chest as it opens with each inhalation.

Drop your awareness beneath the chest surface to the lungs and heart, deep to the sternum and front ribs.

Feel your expansive energy/breath reach all the way to the back of the heart-center, facilitating awareness to the back ribs and shoulder blades.

Continue to breathe into the heart-center with expanding, deepening awareness.

Feel your bioenergetic field expand around your Self with each inhalation.

Feel your loving awareness deepen into the center of your Self with each exhalation.

Listen and fully experience this awareness of energy circulating through the heart-center (lungs and heart).

Connect with the energy of Unconditional Love.

Contemplate Love as the very tangibility of our existence.

Give your Self permission to experience this Love.

When this process of Self Compassion feels complete, be sure to return your field of awareness back to a state that feels manageable and grounded.

This is a practice inspired by my dear friend and mentor (Kelley's "Joyful Heart, Blissful Life" seminar). By bringing the hands to the heart, we are able to more easily direct our awareness to this center of the mind-body. Here, we can fill up with the good stuff, allowing Unconditional Love to flow throughout.
