Mind-Body Ritual #5: Left-Right Breath

Position
Seated upright in comfortable position
Breathing Pattern
INHALE through one nostril
EXHALE through opposite nostril
Alternate nostrils with each breath cycle
Intention
Balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Create harmony and equilibrium. Balance.
Practice
Sit comfortably with spine erect
Rest your left hand on your lap or knee
Bring your right hand to your face
Use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril
Inhale slowly through your left nostril
At the top of the inhale, close your left nostril with your ring finger
Release your thumb and exhale through your right nostril
Inhale through your right nostril
Close your right nostril with your thumb
Release your ring finger and exhale through your left nostril
This completes one full cycle
Continue alternating for 5-10 minutes or as long as feels comfortable
Maintain smooth, even breaths throughout the practice
End the practice by exhaling through your left nostril
This ancient yogic breathing technique, also known as Nadi Shodhana, balances the masculine and feminine energies within. It calms the mind, reduces anxiety, and brings clarity by harmonizing the left and right brain hemispheres.
